  • Eh. He can say what he wants. He says the Gulf of Mexico is now the Gulf of America, he says Lake Ontario is now Lake America. Those changes reflect online for Americans, but for the rest of the world they keep their name.

Interesting question: if Trump declares Canada to be a state (ergo, the 51st) but has no military action behind it, and Ottawa doesn’t declare it false, but instead seeks federal benefits for Canadians, what happens?

Game it out. So to the USA, Canada is a state. Candians now have American citizenship. Washington can ask Canadians for taxes, but they have no authority to enforce it. They can issue arrest warrants, but those can only be executed in the US. Any Canadian who does not travel to the US is safe. But if Canada is a state in the eyes of the US government, doesn’t that just entitle Canadians to benefits? And doesn’t Ottawa then get to send two senators and a certain number of representatives? Also, the Canadian embassy in the US closes because, to the US, Canada is part of the US. The ambassador in Canada also leaves because he or she believes Canada to be a state; therefore they have no job.

I say let Canada play it out, eh?

  • As a guy who is generally opposed to a lot of AI crap… if it can be turned against those who have turned gaming against the people… I say good. Fuck 'em. Gaming publishers have glazed Microsoft and Nvidia for far too long, and if Mac and Linux users can get native ports of PC and console games, I think that’s fine.

I’d prefer people pretty much stick to games they actually paid for, but I’m also aware of what world I live in. Would I play a vibe-coded Deus Ex port on my Mac? Oh, abso-fucking-lutely! Same with Unreal Tournament. I feel like these nearly 30 year old games shouldn’t be that hard to port. I’ve actually ran Deus Ex on the Mac via Whisky, when that was a thing, and it didn’t work, and I had to make it work by using “Deus Exe” (which modernizes the launching of the game) and a newer renderer (sorry, I forget which one). The same work should work for Unreal Tournament as well, as Deus Ex was based on it (more specifically, the OG Unreal Engine).

If the game companies wanted to profit from this, they could have pulled Microsoft’s […] (self-censoring there) out of their mouths and done the work themselves. Far as I’m concerned, most of these games are functionally abandonware. They aren’t releasing them for modern platforms, so the money lost due to piracy is effectively $0. I mean, even if I wanted to run Windows on my Mac, it wouldn’t work (since they’re all ARM64 these days, and even if Windows for ARM didn’t suck, it wouldn’t run the old x86 games). So publishers abandoned modern computing platforms. I wish games just got ported to work on whatever people use, go with the flow, but if they don’t wanna sell it to me — noting that we’re talking about stuff I’ve already bought — I see no ethical dilemma in downloading it.

As for Nintendo stuff, that’s just exciting. I used to play the shit outta Animal Crossing on the Switch. I think the 3DS one, New Leaf, is actually the better game, and with an emulator, about half of it actually looks better. You look at AC New Leaf running on my MacBook next to AC New Horizons on my Switch, and if you weren’t an Animal Crossing player, I’m not sure you could tell me which is the newer one. New Horizons natively ported to Mac, Linux, and Windows would be an incredible experience, especially if we could play online and do the cheat islands (or just use console commands to spawn the shit we want). And make it so we can get to the other (official) islands (the hippie commune, and the resort archipelago) without a loading screen? Heck yeah. The game could be so much better, and I can’t wait to see how the next one is. Otherwise, I just wanna see a native Mac (/others) port of Zelda 3.

  • I think you did fine. As a guy with nieces, my standard for how I’d approach a woman socially is how I’d like another man to approach one of my nieces socially. In a public place where she has several outs if she gets a bad vibe from the situation. But also confident and direct. But just because he shot his shot respectfully doesn’t mean you owe him conversation. Being at a mall to shop or to walk or to kill time is perfectly fine. A lot of younger people do use it as a meeting place because it is big and public and you can explore similar interests while shopping, or even window shopping. When I was younger, I avoided the mall because “mall people” weren’t my kind of people, but now I can see the advantage.

I’d ask you how you’d prefer to be approached, but it’s beside the point since you weren’t looking to be approached in the first place, and that’s fine too.

  • Does the teenage girl she killed get to come back to life? Or is she still dead?

So you wouldn’t let her stay with you, but you’d release her into a community with other people you don’t have to answer to and aren’t responsible for.

I’m not sure anyone is or isn’t beyond rehabilitation. I’d leave that to professionals.

I wouldn’t trust her around my people, so I wouldn’t impose her upon yours (or someone else’s). That’s all. I’m professional nothing other than Internet commentator, more or less same as I assume you are.

  • I am a realist and (at least in intent) stoic, I prefer the truth.

The earlier comment about not wanting to know if you can’t do anything about it (sister’s dog is sick/died), I would prefer the truth, but I’m not going to let something I have no control over affect my presence.

To be honest, I don’t think anyone can be truly stoic (think Spock from Star Trek) 100% of the time, it works with fictional characters, but “I control y emotional response” is always more of a goal than the reality.

  • Just how I got banned, really. I forget what the topic even was about. Someone who abused a child and got off light. Like they got probation or jail time served or something. I said people who harm children should face longer sentences, like a decade or more. I’m not sure if it was my wording or what, but I got banned for inciting violence against a protected class. I wasn’t sure if it was an AI thing (automated, like automod) or what, but I appealed and they upheld it… so I didn’t go back. I figure if that’s their position, I don’t want to be there anyway.

“The API stuff” is so glossed over by people who either weren’t there or forgot or, I dunno, don’t want Reddit to look as bad as they were? They tried to accuse a third-party developer of extortion, but he recorded the conversation and provided the raw recording as well as a transcript. I think Reddit mostly just wanted Apollo in particular to go away and tried some underhanded tactics to make that happen, but they didn’t expect the developer would record the conversation and embarrass them.
