Ketchup, or catsup, which is the same word latinized differently, was a fish sauce from China.

The western Europeans and American colonists used the recipe, and expanded it to things like mushrooms and many other ingredients. (for proof, look at the ketchup entry on wikipedia).

Tomato ketchup (which is specified on your bottle still today) wasn’t invented until we realized that tomatoes weren’t poisonous despite their color, and their sweetness and tang totally rocked with the ketchup recipe.

Now we use it to eat frenched fries, which aren’t French! In fact, they are Belgian, and are named because they used a cooking technique invented by the French called “frenching” which has evolved into deep frying.

So, you are dipping your belgian potatoes into a chinese sauce that use a North American fruit as a base.

And with this information, you shall father nations!

The Mission Impossible theme, you know, the “Dun! Dun! DADA! Dun! Dun! Duhduh!” one, written in 5/4 time? That’s supposed to spell MI for Mission: Impossible, in Morse code. --.. dash dash dot dot, MI. The first two notes are dotted quarter notes, 1.5 beats each for a total of 3 beats, then two quarter notes for each dot, total of 2 beats, grand total of 5 beats per measure. 5/4 time.

FIND A PRACTICAL USE FOR THAT SHIT.

Hey! Same for Rush’s YYZ. The morse code for Y-Y-Z (the airport code for the Toronto airport where the band no doubt spent a lot of time) is --.- --.- --.. which is a rhythmic motif that appears a bunch in the song in some ungodly meter I don’t care to look up right now.

So, I don’t know if it did it on your end, the reason why I put my morse code in a code block is it expanded the two dots into three. Don’t know if it does it on all UIs but on my end it made your Z into dash dash dot dot dot.

He says, as if it matters.

Our ability to feel social judgment and shame reuses the same neural circuits as physical disgust or nausea. This effectively makes it so you can take anti-nausea medication to temporarily make you less judgy of other people’s life choices.

And according to some weirdos on the internet who apparently know some concerning things from experience, human meat tastes the same as pig meat. Tastes like Pork. But now I’m curious why pork & ham & bacon are three distinctly different tastes & textures if they all come from pig.

You can double an hourly rate to approximate the annual wage. $30/hr ~= $60k / year.

    Because 50 paid weeks * 40 paid hours = 2000 hours -> 2k

    $30 * 2k = $60k

Everyone knows you jump in the pool in summer, smell the chlorine, and know the water is clean, right?

Fun fact- chlorine dissolved in pool water at the usual sanitation levels has almost no perceptible smell or taste.
HOWEVER, when chlorine binds with certain organic substances, especially ammonia (from the urea in sweat and urine), the result is chloramine which has a significant chlorine-y smell. Chloramine has essentially no disinfecting properties.

So when you go to the public pool and get a whiff of chlorine and think ‘man they’re using a lot of chlorine today’, no, it probably means someone peed in the pool.

    You’re welcome :)

Ok, but why then when you open a bottle of bleach or container of chlorine pellets, does it smell like chlorine. Do they add the piss ahead of time?

take all but 1.5mL out of that gallon jug of household bleach, then fill it back up with water. that’s roughly the concentration of chlorine in a swimming pool.

The specifications for all varieties of “9mm” cartridges (9x17, 9x18, and 9x19) actually call for a projectile with a diameter of 0.355 inches, which is actually 9.017 millimeters.

Similarly, the specification for .38 Special calls for a projectile with a diameter of 0.357 inches.

If you measure the barrel of any firearm chambered in any variety of 9mm, .38 Special, or .357 Magnum, you’ll find that they’re all ostensibly .35 caliber (0.350 inches).

Why? Well, the simplest answer is, things aren’t always what they’re called. In the world of cartridge designations, there are many, many such idiosyncrasies; these are only scratching the surface. I find this interesting because many people perceive cartridge designations as being very uniform, logical, and standardized, but the actual truth is far from that.

In some cases, the number is even made bigger just to make it sound more powerful, such is the case with .460 S&W Magnum, which is a more powerful version of .454 Casull, which itself is a more powerful version of .45 Colt, all of which actually fire a projectile with a diameter measuring 0.452 inches.

The barrels smallest diametral dimension has to smaller than the bullet, otherwise the rifling wouldn’t engage.

Is that what the 0.350" are referring to?

It’s also kinda funny how the most common rifle rounds are smaller calibre than 9mm, so if you ignore all the other metrics, most handguns shoot “bigger” bullets than most rifles.

The barrels smallest diametral dimension has to smaller than the bullet, otherwise the rifling wouldn’t engage.

Kind of, but not really. The bullet actually slightly expands from heating. At the same time though, if you measured the diameter of a cold barrel and a hot barrel you would get two different measurements. If the cold barrel is too tight of a fit the bullet has an increased chance of lodging when it heats up and expands.

This is why bullets moved towards copper jackets with some sort of other metal center chosen for various justifications. The copper jacket is soft, east to expand into rifling grooves, not hard enough to damage and wear out rifling, and can stretch a little if it gets too tight.

Really, the BIGGEST difference is going to be the casing, chambering, and pressure. It’s like how people talk about 5.56 and .223 being the same. They are the same only at face value of size and chambering, but very different on rated pressures. A rifle rated to shoot .223 should only shoot .223. A rifle rated to shoot 5.56 is rated for a higher pressure and can shoot both.

In the same regard to OP: 9mm, .357, and .38 special may measure the same, but all 3 chamber very differently and have different pressures.

Hell, even 9mm has 9mm luger (parabellum) vs 9mm NATO. it’s the same round/casing, but again, different pressure. A gun that shoots luger (lower pressure) should never shoot nato. But a gun that shoots nato (higher pressure) can shoot both.

It’s also kinda funny how the most common rifle rounds are smaller calibre than 9mm, so if you ignore all the other metrics, most handguns shoot “bigger” bullets than most rifles.

True, but this is also why “stopping power” is then measured in ft-lb (foot-pounds) or joules for metric. Pistols may shoot bigger rounds, but at significantly slower speeds. Less powder for recoil control and less barrel length for pressure build up. The bigger size bullet is a compensation for the smaller gun. A rile with a smaller round has far more energy behind it’s round.

With vanishingly rare exception, addicts choose the mood altering substance that is closest to what the medically accepted treatment for their underlying disorder(s) would be.

People who are addicted to alcohol, without exception, have an underlying anxiety disorder.

People with ADHD and similar brain functioning tend to choose amphetamines.

The list goes on and it gets very complicated, because most mood altering substances have multiple effects, and most people have a blend of underlying issues. But the point is, there is a very noteworthy observation there, I feel.

I feel qualified to say this as myself I am 11 years sober and have worked in the field of addiction for 8 years and I’m formally educated.

    Useless knowledge.

When playing Mechwarrior 2 on a Windows 2000 system, make sure to change your video mode to 32bit color.

I’ll throw in a useful tip too!

You can buy USB foot switches for your computer and assign keystrokes and other functions to them.

Almost feels like cheating when you are playing a tactical shooter and can lean left or right and strafe on demand without crossing any controls. Having microphone activation, map, inventory, or any number of misc actions boud to a foot pedal makes a huge difference in your ability to play a game.

The aging sun will make the continental drift stop via increased solar activity which will accelerate rock weathering. This will break the carbon cycle long before the earth is absorbed by the sun going in its red giant phase.

I actually have a theory that I can’t prove, that perhaps a few of the pieces we attribute to Wolfgang were actually hers. Here’s why I think that…

We know they corresponded regularly after she got married and that she continued to compose and send her brother her work, and he wrote back praising her. I have a suspicion that he might have given some of her pieces to be performed, telling patrons they were his. Not to take credit, but so her music would at least be heard.

Again it’s not something I can prove, more like a headcanon thing.
