7 seconds, 14 minutes, 12 seconds, 800 years, done.
If you have trouble with simple counting, use the following mnemonic device: one comes before two comes before 60 comes after 12 comes before six trillion comes after 504. This will make your earlier counting difficulties seem like no big deal.
Except if writing it to a stick, it’s not quite done, it’s just all been copied to the cache, and the actual writing to the stick is only half finished. 🤥
Yeah file dialog estimates got a lot better once the buffer size and
syncflag was invented.dd if=large-ass_file.txt \ of=/mnt/usb1/large_ass-file.txt \ status=progress bs=30M oflag=syncI’m not that sophisticated, I start the copy in a filemanager, and then I open a terminal and use sync to see when it’s actually finished. 😋
Unless I’m mistaken, that’s what the “eject disk” command does—just flushes the buffers to the drive and unmounts.
just flushes the buffers to the drive and unmounts.
Which can take several minutes.

You have seen other progress meters than I have. Mine give me a pretty good estimate often times.
But don’t get me started on friendly dates. Especially friendly dates in emails from a week ago, that tell me that a file has been changed yesterday. coughFuck you nextcloud.
